Leading Inside Out
We are currently facing two major crises in our world. A crisis of leadership and a crisis of mental health. Trust in our traditional institutions is at an all-time low while mental health problems are at an all-time high. This is not a coincidence. But as with any large crisis, there exists an opportunity for transformational change. My mission is to empower creatives to lead from the inside out, and drive change from within.
My Story
I grew up in quite unusual circumstances. When I was very young, my Mum, Maryanne, was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, a serious mental illness that causes severe problems with understanding reality. She would often hear voices or believe wild stories that were simply not true. Some days she believed she was royalty, some days she believed she was being followed by spies, seemingly, without any rhyme or reason.
This experience with my Mum gave me a burning desire to understand both the nature of reality and the nature of the human mind. I pursued my studies in psychology with curiosity and passion, absorbing as much knowledge as I possibly could. And finally, I began working in my own psychology practice, the proudest day of my life. At last, I could assist people with the knowledge and experience I had accumulated over a lifetime. I was working in line with my purpose.

However, during the global pandemic in 2021, everything changed for me. In a sudden and unthinkable twist, my Mum, who had been battling cancer, lost consciousness. She was rushed to the hospital, and just days after, she lost her life in the midst of the pandemic. Like so many people that year, I struggled with the toll of the pandemic restrictions in the midst of grief. Family members were unable to visit from interstate. I could not hold a proper funeral for my Mum, burying her with just six people present due to the restrictions placed on gatherings. It was the saddest day of my life.

It was during this crisis that I felt first-hand the true impact of leadership. Along with everybody else, I learned just how much the decisions made by leaders completely removed from me could dramatically alter my life, for better or worse. Closer to home, the way in which certain members of my family stepped in to take the load off me or the way hospital staff could brighten my day with small acts of kindness... Leadership at every level made a lasting impact on me whether it was at the family, community, health or government level.
It was after this experience of crisis that I embarked on the second big quest of my life, to understand the nature of transformational leadership. Today, it is my mission to help as many people as I can to discover the true power of leading INSIDE OUT. Let's strive to lead with empathy, hope and courage through change.
